The GNU Pulse Survey reveals a South African public that is cautiously hopeful but deeply uncertain about the Government of National Unity. With 154 respondents, the panel shows a nation holding its breath: half follow the news only at headline level, confidence in the GNU averages 61.6 on a 100-point scale, and the most common feeling is 'a hopeful experiment' (37%). Yet beneath that hope runs a current of distrust — 78% of respondents indicate low or no trust in political leaders, and 80% believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. This is a definitive pulse check on a coalition governing a nation that is divided, distrusting, but still hoping.

The GNU Pulse Survey was conducted on the Dootsa panel between 30 July and 2 September 2026 (35 calendar days). A total of 154 completed responses were analysed: 150 from registered panel members and 4 from consented guests. The instrument took approximately 4 minutes to complete and covered 16 questions across five thematic sections. Estimates are credible as they reflect an organic, non-purchased panel recruited through product-led growth and referrals, with a 98.1% completion rate.
